Industry Survey Reports Stabilizing Economic Outlook Among ManufacturersPricewaterhouseCoopers' latest Manufacturing Barometer Q2 2010 survey reports optimism among nearly half of the manufacturers surveyed, despite lingering public uncertainty about the U.S. economy. According to the report, 45 percent of U.S. industrial manufacturers remain optimistic about the U.S. economy’s prospects over the next 12 months, while 43 percent remain uncertain, and 12 percent are pessimistic. The majority of panelists (58 percent) believed the U.S. economy was growing in Q2 2010, marking the first quarterly survey since Q3 2007 for which a majority reported growth. NEMA Releases Revised MG 1 StandardThe National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) released NEMA MG 1-2009 Motors and Generators, which includes information about performance, safety, testing, construction and manufacture of alternating-current (AC) and direct-current (DC) motors and generators. The new MG 1 edition includes information about international motor efficiency requirements such as a revision to motor efficiency tables for 50 Hz products to reflect those of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Other changes include revised minimum insulation resistance, clarification of motor efficiency values, and the addition of sections on auxiliary devices, ratings tests and performance for AC and DC motors. CEE Releases New RFQ/RFP Guidance for Water-Wastewater FacilitiesWith energy costs accounting for as much as 55% of facility operating costs, energy efficiency offers abundant and largely untapped savings opportunities at most water and wastewater treatment facilities. A new guidance resource, developed by CEE working with the Water Environment Federation (WEF), is designed to help water-wastewater utilities include energy efficiency provisions in their solicitations for facility upgrades and new construction. Water-wastewater utility managers and municipal officials can use this resource as a template that can be included in part or in whole in design service solicitations. DOE Offers Series of One Day Motor Systems Management WorkshopsThe DOE Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) is offering four motor systems management workshops during August and November, in St. Louis, Missouri (8/17), Columbia, Missouri (8/18), Kansas City, Missouri (8/19), and Downey, California (11/17). Topics include applications, inventory tracking, maintenance, replacement decisions, repair, impact and maintenance of power quality, and a rigorous overview of MotorMaster+ software. Click here for the full ITP training calendar. DOE to Host Industrial Energy Efficiency Programs for Utilities WorkshopDOE will host a regional workshop, September 15 in Oklahoma City that aims to expand the energy efficiency offerings of utilities for their key industrial accounts. The workshop will present a broad range of turn-key tools, industrial energy efficiency training programs and resources, as well as best practice utility programs already operating in the region. EPA Launches Building Performance with Energy StarEnergy use in commercial buildings accounts for 17 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions at a cost of over $100 billion per year. In response to this opportunity, a new pilot program designed to further improve commercial building energy efficiency was launched in May by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Building Performance with Energy Star will help utilities and state energy efficiency programs achieve increased energy savings and mitigate climate change by strategically pursuing whole building energy improvements. Regional energy efficiency programs will be provided a framework for applying financial incentives and technical services toward comprehensive building upgrades. The pilot program is being launched with several MDM sponsors, including MidAmerican Energy, National Grid, New Jersey's Clean Energy Program, Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and CEE members Commonwealth Edison and Wisconsin Focus on Energy. | MDM Sponsor Spotlight | |||||||
|
This section highlights MDM sponsor motor management programs, activities, and accomplishments. MDM Sponsors Recognized by DOE's Save Energy Now ProgramGE was recognized by DOE as a top performing manufacturer, sharing with other recipients the 2010 Save Energy Now Energy Champion Plants award for its facility in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Recipients of this award must demonstrate more than 250,000 MMBtu total energy savings or more than 15% total energy savings (click here to see all the recipients of this award). Danfoss is recognized as a Save Energy Now LEADER organization. Leader organizations work in partnership with DOE's Industrial Technologies Program and pledge a 25% or greater reduction in energy intensity over 10 years. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Copper Development Association (CDA), and Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA) are recognized as Save Energy Now ALLY organizations. Ally organizations work to reduce energy intensity and promote energy efficiency programs and measures in their organizations. Advanced Energy Covers Changing Efficiency Standards in Article SeriesThe first article of a two part series by Advanced Energy, Electrical Motor Efficiency Regulations Part One, appears in the June edition of Pumps & Systems. The article summarizes the new EISA federal motor efficiency standards, including the newly defined general purpose motor categories, revised NEMA MG 1 tables, and impact on OEMs and end users. The second installment, scheduled for later in the year, will cover the new energy conservation standards for small electric motors. |

Maintenance Technology magazine runs a bi-monthly column ("Boosting Your Bottom Line") contributed by MDM staff and sponsors. The column discusses motor management strategies ranging from motor maintenance to creating a spares inventory. The June issue of Maintenance Technology featured the article Your Motor Inventory - A Real Waste Buster which emphasized the importance of evaluating a facility's complete motor inventory. This process includes determining if motors are properly sized and loaded and determining which motors are candidates for upgrading to higher efficiency models either as immediate replacement or upon motor failure. MDM resources are cited in a June E-Source article Making Motor Repair or Replacement Decisions which provides an economic comparison between repairing or replacing a motor as well as factors to consider and links to additional resources. The May/June 2010 issue of Lubrication Management and Technology includes the article Building Blocks of Motor Management, which discusses the key aspects to proactive motor management, including developing a motor inventory, repair-replace decision guidelines, purchasing specifications, and best practice repair specifications. |
