The Motor Decisions MatterSM (MDM) Campaign is a national public awareness campaign to increase awareness of motor management opportunities, increase demand for NEMA Premium® motors & best practice motor repair, and encourage the market to engage in motor planning. The Campaign was launched in 2001 by a diverse group of stakeholders including energy efficiency program administrators, motor manufacturers, sales and service centers, and trade associations.

New Prescriptive Efficiency Programs for Motors

Two new efficiency programs were recently introduced by CEE members AmerenUE and Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD). Summaries of these programs, including links to additional information, appear below:

AmerenUE: Business Energy Efficiency

  • Prescriptive incentives were introduced for Missouri customers as of February 2009.
Prescriptive incentives are now available to businesses for common energy-efficiency projects for lighting, HVAC, refrigeration, and motor systems.
  • Prescriptive incentives are available for 1-200 hp NEMA Premium, three-phase electric motors.
  • Equipment must be new and purchased for a non-residential business, commercial, or industrial building, or serving common areas of a multi-family building.
  • Pre-approval is required for incentive requests of $10,000 and above, and is highly recommended for all requests to a) ensure product eligibility and b) reserve the incentive funds.
  • Custom incentives are also available. Eligible custom projects may include variable frequency drives on process fans or pumps, compressed air system improvements, or improvements to reduce the energy use per unit of production for manufacturing processes.
  • Energy efficient equipment or services purchased, contracted for, or the work conducted must occur on or after February 11th, 2009.
  • Additional information is available at www.ameren.com/BIZEfficiency/ADC_StandardPrograms.asp.

Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD): EnergyWiseSM for Your Business

  • New prescriptive incentives were introduced for Nebraska customers as of April 2009 as part of NPPD’s EnergyWise programs.
  • Prescriptive incentives are available for 1-200hp NEMA Premium, three-phase electric motors.
  • Prescriptive incentives are also available for 1-200hp three-phase variable frequency drives. Drives must be new applications connected to centrifugal loads and operating a minimum of 2000 hours annually.
  • Motor and drive incentives are not available to customers who qualify for NPPD’s Irrigation Efficiency Incentive Program.
  • Equipment must be new and installed in a commercial or industrial facility receiving electric service from NPPD or one of NPPD’s participating wholesale utilities.
  • Purchase and installation of the energy efficient equipment must occur on or after April 1, 2009.
  • Additional information is available at www.nppd.com/Energy_Efficiency/EnergyWise/incentives.asp.

New from DOE: Recovery Act Web site and Industrial Software Tools

DOE Web Site Focused on Recovery Act Information
The U.S. Department of Energy has added a Web site to provide information about funding for energy and energy efficiency that has been made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act ("Recovery Act"). The Web site, http://www.energy.gov/recovery/, includes summary information about the federal energy-related programs outlined in the Recovery Act (program name, available funding, and the DOE office responsible for administering) as well as information about Recovery Act funding for each state, the District of Columbia, Tribal Nations, and U.S. territories. The Web site also includes a section which provides links to DOE Funding Opportunities, authorized through the Recovery Act, and a separate section which compiles Communications, Plans, and Reports related to DOE and the Recovery Act, such as press releases and weekly spending reports.

DOE Industrial Facilities Tool Suite
DOE's newest software tools provide users with a variety of resources to analyze several of the energy intensive systems found in industrial facilities, including cooling, heating, and power systems. The following three software tools are now available:

  • Industrial Facilities Score Card, Version 1.1: An industrial scorecard (uses Microsoft Excel) designed to provide a snapshot of energy use for each building at a plant and facilitate identifying opportunities for energy savings.
  • BCHP Screening Tool, Version 2: A screening tool to assess the economical potential of Buildings Cooling, Heating, and Power (BCHP) systems based on equipment databases, climate data, and load calculations.
  • Industrial Facilities System Assessment Tool (IFSAT) Beta Version: Similar to the BCHP Screening Tool, this tool focuses on building energy consumption, such as enclosed and conditioned process buildings, and includes building and equipment types related to manufacturing. Currently in beta version, DOE is soliciting feedback about this tool.
Additional information, including the software tools and instructions for downloading, are available from the DOE ITP Software Tools Website.

    MDM in the News

Maintenance Technology magazine runs a bimonthly column ("Boosting Your Bottom Line") contributed by MDM project staff. The column provides a systematic discussion of motor management strategies ranging from motor planning to creating a spares inventory. Recent columns have highlighted that motor failure can be an opportunity to introduce motor management, Turn Motor Failure Into Opportunity! (March 2009), and that motor maintenance can help preserve motor life and ultimately save money, Save Money Through Routine Maintenance (January 2009).

Power Engineering magazine publishes articles relevant to the power generation and transmission industry. Topics range from new technologies and installations to market reports, news, and commentary. A recent Power Engineering article, Effective Motor Management (March 2009), highlighted the benefits of motor management and how MDM tools can help end users get started.

Food Processing magazine positions itself as an information resource for the food and beverage industry by focusing on topics to help their readers run their businesses more efficiently, safely, and profitably. A February 2009 article, Motors Next Big Act, focused on what's next for motors and motor efficiency, including the implementation of new federal minimum standards in December 2010.

HPAC Engineering: Heating/Piping/Air Conditioning is a mechanical systems engineering magazine, publishing articles that focus on addressing solutions in reference to HVACR technologies, techniques, and tools. Topic areas include: design and sizing, facility and energy management, building automation systems (BAS) and controls, energy and water efficiency, indoor air quality (IAQ), comfort management, and deregulation. The February 2009 publication included a summary of motor efficiency, which referenced MDM: Understanding the Efficiency of Motors.

Consulting & Specifying Engineer magazine is an integrated engineering source for commercial, institutional, and industrial building systems. A December 2008 article, How Green is your Motor?, provides an overview of motor life cycle cost and efficiency in industrial motors.
